Job Summary
We are looking for a highly skilled Cloud Operations Database Administrator with deep expertise in AWS to design, manage, and optimize our cloud-based database infrastructure. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of mission-critical databases that support our business operations and customer-facing applications in a 24x7 environment. You will collaborate closely with development, security, and operations teams to implement best practices for database performance, automation, and cost optimization. This position requires a blend of hands-on technical skills, strategic thinking, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Your contributions will directly impact application performance, operational efficiency, and the overall success of our cloud strategy. Responsibilities & Duties
- Database Deployment & Configuration: Provision and configure cloud-based database instances such as AWS RDS, EC2, NoSQL, Databricks. Set up clustering, replication, and failover for high availability. Migrate on-premises databases to cloud environments.
- Performance Monitoring & Optimization: Monitor database health and query performance using CloudWatch, Performance Insights, other AWS and 3rd party tools. Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, optimize queries, adjust instance sizes and/or storage tiers to balance cost and performance.
- Security & Compliance: Implement IAM roles, encryption (KMS), and security groups to enforce data protection. Ensure compliance with regulations (e.g. GDPR, ITAR, HIPAA, SOC 2). Audit permissions and maintain secure access controls.
- Backup, Recovery & Disaster Preparedness: Configure automated backups, snapshots, and point-in-time recovery. Develop and test disaster recovery plans. Ensure point-in-time recovery capabilities at both the database and instance levels.
- Automation and Scripting: Develop scripts and automation workflows for routine tasks (e.g. scaling, patching, monitoring) with AWS CLI, PowerShell, Python. Use Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools (Terraform, CloudFormation) for repeatable deployments.
- Patch Management & Upgrades: Apply patches, updates, and version upgrades while minimizing downtime. Evaluate new features or services as introduced.
- Cost & Resource Optimization: Monitor usages and costs with AWS Cost Explorer, Trusted Advisor or other mechanisms. Optimize storage, compute and licensing to control expenses.
- Troubleshooting & Support: Diagnose and resolve database issues, provide on-call support for critical incidents, and collaborate with development and operations teams to address application-level concerns.
- Documentation & Process Improvement: Maintain detailed documentation of database architecture, configurations, and procedures. Contribute to continuous improvement of operational processes.
Requirements and Skills
- Strong expertise in AWS RDS, Aurora (server and serverless)
- PostgreSQL

- Proficiency in performance tuning, backup strategies, disaster recovery.
- Strong experience with automation and scripting (AWS CLI, PowerShell, Python).

- B.S., B.A. or commensurate work experience.
