Background information/Organizational Context

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect and assist refugees and other persons of concern. The UNHCR opened its’ office in Pristina in 1994 and operates through the Office of UNHCR Chief of Mission located in Pristina.

In the context of durable solutions and sustainable reintegration, UNHCR monitors the protection situation of the minority voluntary returns and internally displaced populations across Kosovo. Their needs and rights are addressed through the active engagement of responsible institutions in finding solutions for obstacles in voluntary return and reintegration. In addition, UNHCR contributes to the establishment of an efficient asylum system in Kosovo. Through various partnerships, UNHCR develops the capacity of relevant stakeholders engaged in asylum matters, taking into consideration mixed migration perspective.

Interns bring diverse profiles and knowledge, innovative thinking and different ideas to the UNHCR workplace. By undertaking this internship assignment, the intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in the humanitarian sector in an international environment, the role of UNHCR in Kosovo and globally and gain knowledge and practical experience related to their professional background. Excellent opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge by completing all mandatory UNHCR online training programmes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with staff members to exchange information and coordinate specific tasks among Protection/Field, Programme and External Relations/PI Units;
  • Share periodic updates with the UN Agencies, EU Office in Kosovo, Embassies, etc.;
  • Assist in developing communication plan for advocacy purposes with media, the public, NGOs, etc.;
  • Write articles about UNHCR events, interviewing officials and persons of concern;
  • Monitor all public events in Kosovo as relevant to UNHCR and flag events where UNHCR could promote its mandate and activities;
  • Assist in managing social media platforms including planning, researching, producing engaging content, and translation tasks;
  • Maintain team / field calendar for coordination purposes;
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

Minimum qualifications required

  • Be a recent graduate (i.e. studies completed within one year of applying for an internship with UNHCR), in a relevant graduate university programme e.g. journalism, communication, social science;

Required competencies:

  • Strong interest in refugee rights, public relations, human rights and humanitarian response;
  • Good research and analytical skills;
  • Fluency in English and local languages;
  • Communication and computer skills.


  • The internship is full time (40 hours per week). Working hours are 8.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday;
  • The intern will report directly to the Communications/PI Associate;
  • Applicants must be entitled to work in Kosovo.


In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Please note that candidates who have immediate relatives (father, mother, daughter, son, brother or sister) working as staff members of UNHCR are not eligible to apply.


Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
